Dana Wood, The Artist

THE ARTIST

I love to get lost in the rhythm of creative process and therefore, I have always known that I would be an artist.

The recurring theme in my work is that of the beauty I find in the natural waterscapes and landscapes of Canada’s West Coast. I grew up living by the ocean and find my inspiration in beaches, forests and streams.
I feel very strongly that the natural world played a fundamental role in shaping my character. As a result of this, it is very important to me that I channel my appreciation and love for the Coast into my work.

I like to bring beauty into simple things and portray them in a way that my audience can relate to. My work is usually figurative and representational, though I like to work in a variety of styles. I have recently been working with drawing techniques, jewellery design, and intaglio print etching, but my current practice is in oil painting. I often incorporate a mixed media of acrylics, charcoal, photography, ink and graphite into my paintings. Usually this is done purely for aesthetic reasons. More often than not, I use paint thinly, building up layers, because I enjoy the fluidity of the medium – it suits my subject matter and gives my work a delicate appeal.

Aside from my main artistic practice, I also enjoy doing small-scale watercolours and ink drawings, painting designs on canvas shoes,
and painting or drawing portraits.

Dana Wood, The Ambition

THE AMBITION

I have spent a lot of time considering how I want to apply my artistic talents to my future. Thinking about this has shown me who I am and who I want to become. My initial goal at present is to graduate from art school with my Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree specializing in painting. Then I hope to teach private lessons to individuals who are truly passionate about art. It would also be a dream-come-true to use my talents to inspire children and young teens, just as my mentors inspired me.
